The Quarter Kitchen and Taproom

Throwback Thursday Post

We had just arrived in McAllen after a 4 day journey across the country from the greater Cleveland area. The @dosrosadventures move back to the great state of Texas was nearly complete. But after 4 days in a Uhaul with two cats (@tangerineandtoribell) and a very large puppy (@milodosros), we were exhausted. Nevertheless, we made it to the townhouse I (@knrottet) would be renting for our first year back in south Texas. We made it to City Hall in time to get the utilities turned on that day, and got unpacked enough (we had significant assistance from a company we hired) to return the Uhaul, clean up, and reward ourselves with dinner.

The Quarter was the first restaurants in McAllen that we tried after moving here. I remember us talking and finding it a little funny that we chose a New Orleans style tap room for dinner because just days after I interviewed for the job at UTRGV I had also interviewed for a job at Tulane in New Orleans. In hindsight – we always knew that UTRGV was the job we wanted me to get for many reasons, but I would not have felt comfortable putting all our eggs into one basket. And the interview at Tulane was a good experience – one that made me a better professional in my opinion because of the level of rigor involved in those three days. But that’s getting off track a bit.

The Quarter – we’ve been to The Quarter twice – the first night we were here, and the other when we took the family visiting from San Antonio to dinner for a birthday dinner. Specifically to the food and beverages – there was quite a good beverage selection – mixed drinks, and beer too, but mostly in bottles/cans. The first trip there I had the Red Beans & Rice. The second I had the Jambalaya. As it turned out, the company who we took to The Quarter also thoroughly enjoyed their experience, with one member of that party claiming to want to find a place in San Antonio who made a shrimp po boy to the quality of The Quarter’s sandwich.

The vibe of the place – that was a little hard to gauge because we went at varying times of the day. The first time we went the restaurant was packed, and there was live music. While entertaining, it made it a little difficult to hear. On the second visit, during the middle of the day, it was much quieter. However, I do believe live music is a staple of this tap room in the evenings. We are looking forward to future visits at this local spot.
